Mod - Chips

Just what is a Mod-Chip ?
A Mod-Chip allows your console to play imported games from other countries and also backups (aka copies, golds, pirates) with perfect sound, video with no problems whatsoever. The law in most countries allows the purchaser of an original game to create a back up in case the original copy is lost or damaged. However, your console has a protection system that essentially removes the ability to use such copies. A Mod-Chip will bypass this protection and enable you to make use of backups and imports from other countries. Anyone who purchases a Mod-Chip must be aware that the use of pirate software is illegal and they must own the original game before copying a disc or using a copied disc.

Do Mod-Chips void the warranty of my console once installed ?
Using a Mod-Chip to modify your console will void your warranty.

If I wish to un-install a Mod-Chip, can I do so without any adverse effects ?
The Mod-Chip is easier to remove than it is to install and will leave your console just like it was prior to installation.

No, the chip or the programming in the chip will not damage your console. A simple, but not perfect, analogy might be if you added a mail reading program to your computer. The program is designed for your computer. You install the mail reading program by using a physical format such as a CD or diskette. When you insert the CD or diskette, the drive of your computer "touches" it to get the information. The solder points "touch" your console. The CD or diskette does not stay in the computer, but the chip will stay in your console. Now that you have installed the software from the cd or diskette, you can use your computer to read mail with this program. The program is not going to harm your hard drive, or have any impact on your disk drives, printer or monitor, it simply added the ability for your computer to read mail with the program's instructions. This chip contains a tiny program that the operating software of your console reads and it simply adds the ability for your console to bypass the territorial lock-out. Just like the mail program diskette or cd "touching" the drive so the information can be read into the computer, after proper installation, the chip "touching" the board so the software can be read does not change anything physical in your console. The mail program has programming for your computer to read mail, this tiny programmed integrated circuit chip contains programming to make your console bypass the territorial lock-out. Only the instructional software of your computer knows the new mail program is there, only the instructional software of your console knows the chip's program is there. That is all the chip does.

Will the Mod-Chip damage my console ?
How do I find out whether my American PS One is an NTSC or PAL system ?
US and Japanese -> NTSC
European & Australia & some others -> PAL

Will the mod-chip allow the use of other platform games ?
No, you will be able to play every backup and import game for your system, however you will not be able to play games that are not made for your console.

How can I test my backup copy ?
To find out if your backup copy will perform properly, get a friend to test it in their modified PlayStation. If your backup works in their unit and not in yours, then either the installation was not performed correctly, you have an old PlayStation which can not read CD-R media well or the chip is faulty (which is highly unlikely). The only way to find out if your chip may be defective is borrow a friend's working "mod-ed" PlayStation and install the mod you think is defective into his unit.
